Environmental protection challenges for the metalworking industry

Environmental protection challenges for the metalworking industry

In the field of metalworking, without proper environmental protection measures, the production activities of enterprises can cause many negative impacts on the surrounding environment.

Environmental protection challenges for the metalworking industry are becoming increasingly complex, requiring innovative solutions, technological improvements and creativity in production management to reduce metal waste, ensure highly efficient production operations while ensuring environmental sustainability.

1. What is industrial waste?

A large amount of industrial waste is released during the production of industrial products, especially in the food, textile or metallurgical industries. In fact, people classify industrial waste into two categories: “main waste” and “ordinary waste”. The main group of wastes are those that pose a direct hazard to human health. Ordinary waste does not affect people immediately, but if it is not treated for a long time, the consequences they leave behind are really unpredictable.

Therefore, a big problem for production units in the metal manufacturing industry is how to process effectively but not pollute the environment.

2. Challenges in the metal manufacturing industry

Although there has been a strong shift in the period of industrialization and modernization, the pressure from environmental protection still creates a great challenge in the metal industry. It is the continued use of less advanced machines that leads to increased costs for environmental waste treatment.

The most affected is the water and soil environment because the large amount of industrial waste, industrial solid waste, mechanical processing wastewater treatment, metalworking wastewater at the factory contains a large amount of dirt and toxic impurities discharged directly into the stream gradually seeping into the soil, creating degradation of the water and soil environment.  Despite interventions, the issue has not been fully resolved.

In addition to the above problems, our country’s metal processing industry also depends a lot on rudimentary machinery such as hand cutters, manual electric drills … should cause the phenomenon of wasting raw materials, time and effort. Another problem is noise pollution effects the quality of life of areas near metal factories.

Another problem is that noise pollution adversely impacts the quality of life of areas near metal factories.

4. Proposing solutions for the metalworking industry to protect the environment

An important problem for the metalworking industry is how to treat industrial waste sources so that it can both optimize production and not pollute the environment. Here are the proposed measures to improve the problem of industrial waste polluting our country’s environment:

4.1. Development of renewable energy source production activities

The renewable industry is now becoming a new trend not only in Vietnam but all countries around the world. Using renewable energy sources and applying modern technology to production both helps businesses make the most of resources and can properly protect the environment.

4.2. Combination of environmental protection tax and workshop supervision

Currently, our state sets an environmental protection tax so that people and businesses themselves are responsible for environmental protection. In addition, machinery factories need to impose strict management measures in staffing environmental officers. Especially in communes and districts, where factories are distributing operations.

Local authorities need to be serious in their task of coordinating and combining with factories to jointly implement policies related to environmental protection. It is possible to build and develop a network of organizations on environmental protection issues in craft villages whose special metal production workshops. In addition, organize many self-management programs on environmental protection, regularly organize environmental sanitation and environmental cleaning activities.

4.3. Can the current new processing machine overcome the above limitations?

Adding new processing equipment is a trend that has been applied in the industry of some countries around the world to protect the environment. Thanks to the application of improvements from new processing equipment, the production process is shortened, the risks entailing environmental pollution during the production process are guaranteed to be minimized.

However, many enterprises in our country are still not ready to equip advanced machinery and processing technology because the main reason is that buying new equipment will be extremely expensive while old machines are still in use.

5. Conclusion

It can be seen that the prime requirement for the domestic industry is still to conduct production activities according to modern advanced processes without causing harm to the surrounding environment. Since environmental protection is always a top priority, the domestic industry needs to plan and strategize well to be able to improve the environment in the future.

Given the general requirements in the industry, businesses need to make efforts and catch up with the trend of metal waste treatment, industrial solid waste to protect the environment and limit challenges for the metalworking industry.
